Corkwood

Bare cinnamon trunks of harvested cork oaks climb a scrubby hillside, canopies pressed flat by wind. Corkwood shows Pyotr Konchalovsky treating a grove of stripped trees like architecture. Thick impasto brushwork lays the paint on like plaster: ochre and rust across the peeled bark, sap green massed into crowns, terracotta earth stitched with blue shadow. The sky barely appears; light works on the trunks instead, warming every scar to honey. At home in a study or reading nook, where mossy greens and sun-warmed amber quiet a room without letting it go dim.
