Construction of the Palace Bridge

Timber cranes lean out over the Neva, granite piers rising from the riverbed while barges crowd the unfinished span. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva builds her Construction of the Palace Bridge from black line and cold light. Crosshatching darkens the river to slate. Derricks and pile trestles stand in crisp silhouette against a pale sky, scaffolding stitches pier to pier, and the far embankment fades to bare paper. Every girder, cable, and block of stone gets a decisive stroke. Hang it where work happens: a study, a drafting corner, an entryway that wants one strong horizon.
