Connecticut Landscape

A red barn anchors the middle distance, its roof catching the strongest light in the picture. William James Glackens painted this Connecticut landscape with the loose, confident touch of a sketcher working outdoors, letting fields and sky meet in quick, wet strokes. Greens run from deep pine to a yellowed olive where sun hits the grass. Thick paint sits along fence lines and tree trunks, thinner washes open the sky, and a pale track curls toward the buildings.
