Confession of the Peasant (Composition with Self-Portrait)

A peasant stands at the center, head bowed, hands rough and enormous against a darkened field. Around him, Octav Bancila builds a confession in paint: labor, hunger, and the artist face of the maker set into the same crowded frame. Ochres and bitter browns dominate, broken by a pale face turned outward from the throng. Brushwork is heavy, almost kneaded, the way mud takes a bootprint. Figures press shoulder to shoulder while the self portrait watches from within, neither apart from the suffering nor above it. Every surface carries the weight of earth turned by hand. Suits a study or reading room where quiet, serious company belongs.
