Composition No. 4 (Leaving The Factory)

Workers pour from the factory gates, their bodies cut into flat planes of red, yellow, blue and black. Bart van der Leck rendered the shift change as pure geometry. Every contour is a hard black line; every shape a single unmodulated color. Arms become wedges, hats become trapezoids, and the crowd reads as one interlocking mosaic of pigment. Nothing blends, nothing shades. The flatness does all the work, holding figures and ground in equal tension. A study or entryway with clean lines gains a jolt of De Stijl order here. It suits rooms that lean modern and uncluttered.
