Composition Abstraite

Angles cut across the sheet in confident planes, one edge sliding beneath the next like paper lifted and reset. Composition Abstraite shows Jacques Villon working through pure form, no figure, no still life, just geometry in motion. Ochre blocks lean into slate grey and a narrow band of brick red, their edges softened by dry hatching that drags pigment across the surface. Washes pool where the planes meet, thin enough to show the paper grain. Crooked diagonals run counter to the frame, keeping the whole arrangement slightly off balance.
