Colonnade of Exchange and Peter and Paul Fortress

Grey water laps beneath the tall colonnade of the Exchange, and beyond it the golden spire of the Peter and Paul Fortress holds its thin line against a pale St Petersburg sky. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva gives the city its coldest, clearest face in this woodcut view of the Neva embankment. Cut into the block with surgical economy, the composition rests on long horizontal registers: the ribbed columns of the Bourse, drawn in disciplined vertical strokes, the flat mirror of the river, and the fortress wall rendered as a low, dense band. Snow or light sits on the parapets in unprinted paper, left white by the knife. The spire carries the eye upward, its needle thin as an engraving line, while the sky stays open and luminous. A study, a hallway with northern light, or a desk facing a window would suit this northern cityscape well.
