Coastal Wildflowers

Yellow and lavender blooms press against the foreground, a slope of California wildflowers meeting salt air. Granville Redmond names the painting plainly: Coastal Wildflowers. Look closer and the brushwork does the work. Short dabs of cadmium yellow and dusty violet sit over cool green stems, while the sea behind stays a quiet band of gray blue. Light falls flat and even, the way it does on an overcast headland, so every blossom keeps its own color instead of burning out. The horizon sits low, letting flowers fill most of the field. Suits a sunroom or a hallway that needs a breath of open coast.
