Coast Scene with Cliffs

Chalk cliffs shoulder their way out of cold water in Coast Scene with Cliffs, an oil composition by Algernon Talmage. The headland dominates from the first glance. Talmage builds the rock face in thick, loaded strokes, pale cream and bone white dragged over darker underpainting so the stone seems to flake off the surface itself. Below, the sea runs in bruised blue-green bands, foam dragged across in short horizontal jabs. A low sky of grey and dirty yellow presses the whole shoreline down. Suits a hallway or seaside cottage sitting room where something bracing and salt-weathered belongs.
