Coast at Chaponival

Cliff grass runs right to the lip where chalk drops away, and below, the sea holds a long grey swell. Gustave Loiseau painted Coast at Chaponival in his close, hatched oil touch. Short crosshatched strokes stack violet shadow against green turf, while pale slate water breaks into cream foam along the tide line. Mauve and ochre flicker through the headland, and the sky stays high, milky, and cool. Gulls hang small and white in the haze. Set it where light shifts through the day: a study desk, an entryway table, or a reading nook with a north window.
