Coaltown

Coal smoke hangs over a hillside town in George Luks Coaltown, the Ashcan painter eye at its grittiest. Pitch roofs and shaft houses stack down the slope, black against a bruised pewter sky. Luks loads the canvas with sooty umber and slate blue, dragging thick impasto through the middle distance until the houses seem to breathe coal dust. A red brick chimney and one pale shaft of daylight cut through the gloom. Hang it where grit reads as beauty: a study, a den, a loft hallway with exposed brick.
