Clouds (Rome)

Clouds take over the sky above Rome, and Fujishima Takeji lets them. The city shrinks to a thin dark line while the painted sky claims nearly the whole picture. Loaded brushwork packs white lead into grey shadow along the undersides, dense as wet plaster, while thinner scumbles of pearl and washed blue open the higher light. Below, a low band of tile roofs and cypress holds all that drifting weight to earth. A room with tall windows suits it best, a study or stairwell where changing daylight keeps the silver and ash tones moving, the way weather actually behaves overhead.
