Clouds, Maine

Clouds fill the frame in Clarence White Clouds, Maine, a photographic study of sky over the New England coast. Billows of cumulus crowd the upper register while a strip of darker horizon holds the lower edge. Tonal gradations carry the picture: pale silver where the sun strikes through, soft pewter in the shadowed underbellies, and near black along the distant treeline. The grain and gentle softness of the photographic surface give the vapor a sculpted, almost painterly weight, the way a Pictorialist would coax a negative toward charcoal drawing.
