About this work

Clouds and Sky, Iona

Clouds ride low over Iona in this Samuel Peploe seascape, painted in broad loaded strokes of white and grey against a heaving blue sky. The Scottish Colourist eye is everywhere: thick impasto cloud banks, a horizon line barely holding, salt air mixed into every brushload. Look closely and the paint does the weathering. Cream whites drag across slate blue, catching light where the clouds thin. Below, the sea holds a deep green shadow, and the whole surface carries the weight of wind off the Atlantic. Nothing sits still. A seascape like this suits a hallway or a room with good daylight, where the movement in the sky can change with the hours.
