Cliffs on the shore

Grey rock faces rise straight out of cold water. Cliffs on the shore by Magnus Enckell shows the Finnish coastline at its most severe, where granite meets the sea without a single tree to soften the edge. The stone reads in slabs and planes, built up in firm brushwork of slate blue, moss green and pale ochre. Water laps against the base in thin bands of grey and white, and the sky above holds a low northern light that leaves no shadow unaccounted for. Every surface feels weighty, mineral, unadorned. A seascape like this belongs in a study or reading room, somewhere quiet and north-facing where the rock and water keep their calm.
