Cliffs of Puy

Chalk cliffs climb the full height of the canvas, their pale faces cut into terraces and ledges by Gustave Loiseau. Trees crowd the summit in dark knots of green. Below, rooftops of a small village press against the rock, red tiles and grey slate stacked between gardens. Loiseau builds the stone with short, broken strokes of cream, violet shadow and ochre, letting the brushwork do the work of sunlight. The sky behind is a soft, quick blue with drifting white. A study or hallway gains real depth from this vertical view, where geology and village life share one frame.
