Cliffs of Etretat

White chalk walls plunge into the grey Channel, the great sea arch and pointed needle standing clear of the surf in Cliffs of Etretat by Gustave Loiseau. Loiseau builds the rock face from short, crosshatched oil strokes of cream and violet shadow, turf along the clifftop laid in emerald dabs. Below, foam whitens the pebble beach while gulls and a few fishing boats keep the human scale small against so much stone. Set it above a console in an entryway or beside a reading chair, so the salt wind off the Norman coast reaches a quiet study or living room.
