Cliffs

Sheer rock faces rise through the frame of Cliffs, a landscape by Constantin Artachino. The stone dominates everything, pushing sky to a narrow band at the top. Patches of ochre and burnt sienna break across the rock in short, directional strokes, each facet of the cliff face catching a different angle of daylight. Below, shadow pools in deep umber at the base where the stone meets scrub and loose scree. The brushwork follows the geology, diagonal and hard-edged, letting raw canvas grain show through thinner passages. A sliver of pale blue above reads as sky, almost an afterthought against so much mass. A study, stairwell, or hallway with strong daylight gives these cliffs the hard light they were painted for.
