Cliffs at Yport

Chalk cliffs rise above the shingle at Yport, their white faces cut with gullies and streaked grey where rain has run down toward the sea. Gustave Loiseau builds the scene in quick, bitten strokes. Ochre grass creeps along the cliff top, fishing boats sit low on the grey-green water below, and the foam line flickers pale against wet stone. His crosshatched touch, learned in the post-impressionist years, gives the whole headland a tremble, as if wind were moving through the paint itself. Suited to a hallway or seaside reading room where light shifts through the day.
