Cliffs at Saint Jouin

Flint-flecked grass crowns the headland at Saint Jouin, and Gustave Loiseau paints it as a band of green pressed against open sky. Below, pale rock drops toward the Channel in stacked ledges, each stratum picked out in cream and dove grey. Short dashes of his brush break the turf into turf, gorse, and shadow. On the shingle, a few boats lie keeled over, their hulls dark against the falling light. A study or coastal reading nook suits it well.
