Cliffs at Cape Frehel

Sandstone towers rise from the Breton sea at Cape Frehel, their russet faces broken by shadowed ledges where gulls settle and the wind combs the grass on top. Gustave Loiseau painted this headland with quick, broken strokes, stacking ochre and rust against a channel of green water below. Foam whitens the base of the rock. Above, heather and dry turf run to the cliff edge in strokes of mauve and olive, and the sky presses close, grey at the horizon, paler overhead. A seaside study or a hallway with good daylight would suit this windswept coastal scene.
