Cliff by the Sea

A sheer rock face drops toward open water in Cliff by the Sea, a marine vision by Lithuanian symbolist Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis. Stone meets sea in one vertical plunge. The cliff rises in muted umber and slate, its rocky surface built from layered planes and hatched brushwork. Below, the water stretches in cold grays and pale greens, the horizon dissolving into a silvered sky. The palette stays quiet, almost mineral, letting the mass of stone carry the whole composition. A study, a hallway, or a reading nook facing north light would suit its cool, contemplative presence.
