Cliff at the Seaside

A sheer rock face drops into a cold Baltic sea, and Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis lets the cliff take the whole weight of the picture. Stone occupies one side, water the other. The rock reads in stacked planes of grey, ochre and bruised violet, its edges drawn with hard contour lines that give it the feel of carved relief rather than geology. Below, the sea simplifies into layered bands of deep blue and green, thin foam lines lapping at the base. Sky is left almost bare, a pale field that pushes the cliff forward. Suited to a study or a hallway where the horizon can breathe, this seascape brings Ciurlionis Lithuanian symbolist vision of land and water into daily view.
