Classical Landscape

White marble columns lean at odd angles across the middle distance of this Classical Landscape. Konstantin Bogaevsky builds his fantasy of antiquity in slow, deliberate layers of paint. Ruins rise from a pale, almost bone-coloured plain. The sky carries a bruised violet weight above them, and thin, cold light rakes across broken pediments and shattered colonnades. Every fragment of carved stone is drawn with the precision of an architect, yet the whole scene feels conjured rather than recorded, a dream of a world that never quite existed. Grey-green shadows pool at the base of each column. A study or library wall suits its measured, scholarly strangeness.
