City Wall

Crenellations stretch across the horizon in Nicholas Roerich City wall, a fortification rendered as a single unbroken band of masonry under open sky. Nothing moves. The rampart holds its line. Roerich builds the scene from broad planes of slate and dusk blue, the stonework blocked in with the flat, confident strokes of his tempera manner. Watchtowers rise at intervals, their silhouettes edged in cooler light, while the ground below sits in muted earth tones, ochre and dry grass pressed close against the base of the masonry. The composition is horizontal, patient, almost architectural in its own right. A study, hallway, or quiet reading room gives a work of this gravity its due.
