City

A walled city gathers on rising ground, towers and rooflines stacked against a deep cobalt sky. Roerich titled the scene simply City, and the name carries all the weight an ancient settlement deserves. Cool blues dominate, tempered by pale ochre walls and the grey of weathered stone. The brushwork is broad and architectural, each block of masonry laid down in flat, confident planes. Domes and turrets catch a cold light, while the surrounding landscape sits hushed beneath that saturated sky. Hang it in a study or an entryway where its quiet monumentality can hold the room, a vision of sacred architecture in the manner of Russian symbolism.
