A pale baroque churchfront rises over a cobbled street in Church of St. Catherine in St. Petersburg, Alexandre Benois drawing each cornice with the affection of long familiarity. Coupled pilasters climb toward a crowning pediment, statues and urns perched along the parapet. Below, pedestrians in dark coats cross wet pavement, reflections puddled thin around their boots. Watery washes of slate, ochre and faded rose sit over fine sepia linework. It suits a study shelved with dark books, or an entryway where guests pause, the muted greys breathing quietly against deeper paint.
