Church in Vilnius

A gothic church tower rises above the old quarter of Vilnius, drawn by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky with the affection of a native son. The artifact takes its name from the city itself. Grey wash and fine ink line build the scene: a tapering brick steeple, crooked gable roofs, narrow lanes that bend away from the square. Crosshatched shadows pool in doorways, and tiny figures drift below spires that dominate the skyline. Every stroke records the layering of Gothic and baroque masonry that gives the old town its silhouette. Suited to a study, reading nook, or hallway where the mood of historic Vilnius can settle quietly overhead.
