Christchurch Estuary Scene

Tide flats stretch wide across the lower canvas, silvered where the estuary water thins into mud and light. Algernon Talmage paints the Christchurch estuary at low water, when the channels braid and the sky takes over half the picture. Look closely and the brushwork does the weather: wet grey dragged in long horizontal strokes, a colder blue pressed into the far shore, one small dark hull moored mid-channel for scale. Gulls sit as loose flecks of white. The foreground reeds are worked drier, almost scumbled, so they catch the light against the damp. A quiet stretch of coastal air for a hallway, a seaside cottage landing, or the wall above a reading chair.
