Chinese Landscape

Mist climbs a range of blue mountains in Chinese Landscape, a work by Fujishima Takeji where ink-wash memory meets Western oil technique. Hazy peaks recede in graded indigo, each ridge softer than the last. The foreground carries the weight: dark pines rooted on a rocky slope, a pale waterfall threading down the cliff face, and small dwellings with tiled roofs tucked among the trees. Takeji builds distance through thin washes of grey-violet while the near rocks hold thicker, earthy pigment. It suits a study or library wall, somewhere quiet enough for the eye to wander up that valley and lose itself in the farthest ridge.
