Chillon Castle, Lake Geneva

Chillon Castle rises from Lake Geneva on its rocky islet, round towers and pale stone walls doubled in the water, in this scene by Violet Oakley. Cool blues and greys dominate. The mountains behind hold a hazy violet light, while sunlight warms the battlements toward ochre where it lands. Reflections break the masonry into soft, wavering bands, and small sailing craft cross the foreground, their sails a bright note against the deep, glassy lake.
