About this work

Chiktan Citadel in Himalayas

Chiktan citadel rises from a Ladakhi ridge in the Himalayas, its ruined towers painted by Nicholas Roerich against a wall of high peaks. Stone and snow hold equal weight in the composition. Roerich builds the fortress in cool grays and earth ochres, each broken towerline drawn with tight, architectural strokes. Above it the sky burns in deep cobalt and violet, his signature Himalayan blue, while glacier light runs pale along the summits. The citadel sits low and dark, a human remnant dwarfed by terrain. Hang it in a study or hallway where mountain silence belongs, a daily view of the far frontier.
