Chiajna Willows

Willows bend along the Chiajna water meadow, their trunks dark against pale ground. Stefan Luchian sets a line of old trees beside still water. Grasses lean. The bank glows soft green and silver. Look closer and the brushwork tells the season: thin sap-green strokes for new leaf, dry ochre dragged across each trunk, a grey-green wash where water holds the sky. Luchian, the great Romanian flower and landscape painter, keeps his edges loose and his light honest. Reflections break into short horizontal dabs. Nothing is smoothed over. A study wall, a hallway, or a quiet reading corner gains from this kind of riverside calm.
