Chest and Pottery

A lidded oak chest squats at the center, iron fittings catching the light, while clay jugs crowd around it. Pyotr Konchalovsky builds Chest and pottery from these humble household things. Thick impasto drags across the terracotta bellies of the vessels, each dented highlight laid on with a loaded brush. Umber shadows pool beneath the heavy lid, ochre warms the rims, and the surface keeps the weight and grain of wood, glaze, and fired earth. It belongs in a farmhouse kitchen or a dining room with rough plaster walls, where earthenware and weathered timber already set the register.
