Warehouses crowd the riverbank at Chernihiv, drawn by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky with the affection he reserved for old provincial towns. Storage barns of timber and plaster lean together under heavy roofs, their gables stepping down toward the water. Dobuzhinsky renders each weathered plank in fine pen line, washes of grey and faded ochre settling into the timber grain. Small windows sit like dark commas in the facades. A dirt road threads between the buildings, empty at midday, and the low horizon leaves most of the sheet to sky and rooftop. A quiet corner of a study or hallway suits this view of old Chernihiv.
