Chamber of Golitsyn

Vaulted stone arches rise into shadow in the Chamber of Golitsyn. Nicholas Roerich treats the interior almost as a cave, letting architecture carry the quiet drama of the scene. Cool greys settle over the masonry while narrow windows and lamp-lit corners pull thin amber light across the floor. Columns, doorways, and heavy vault ribs recede step by step into a hushed violet depth, each plane drawn with the firm, economical stroke the artist brought from his studies of old Russian buildings.
