Ceres, Fife

A field of Ceres in Fife opens the picture: stubble gold running to the horizon, a few low barns catching light on their western faces. Peploe builds the whole scene from thick, deliberate strokes of oil paint, each dab of ochre and slate pressed onto the canvas like a mason sets stone. Look closer and the structure takes over. Hedgerows read as bands of viridian and burnt umber, the sky laid in flat, confident slabs of blue grey, the foreground scored with short vertical marks that suggest cut wheat rather than describe it. Warm cream ground shows through between touches of colour, a trick the Scottish Colourists used to keep daylight burning inside the paint itself. It settles naturally into a study or a dining room, anywhere a quiet harvest landscape can hold a wall on its own.
