Caucasus. Arc Mountain

Snow crowns a great arc of rock in the Caucasus, its curve rising cold and clean above dark foothills. Nicholas Roerich paints the mountain as a vault, a dome of white held against the sky. The palette runs cold: pale blues wash the upper slopes, while shadowed ridges below hold muted greens and umber. Thin strokes of white tempera trace the snow line where it breaks over bare stone. Distance is built in layered bands, each range paler than the last, until only haze remains. A quiet study or stairwell suits this image, anywhere a long view can settle the eye.
