Caucasian Still Life

A low table holds the mountain country in miniature: a copper ewer, a curved horn cup, grapes heaped in a shallow bowl, a dagger laid diagonally across the cloth. This is the Caucasian still life by Eugene Lanceray. The palette runs through deep umber, wine red, and burnished brass, with cooler greys breaking the warmth along the blade and rim. Lanceray draws each object with the same archaeological care he gave his equestrian subjects, every contour crisp against the dark ground. Hung in a dining room or library, it lends a table that sense of gathered history, as though guests had only just stepped away.
