Cathedral Rock, Iona

Grey basalt shoulders the whole composition. Cathedral Rock, Iona by Samuel Peploe sets a Hebridean crag against a cold northern sky, sea light flickering at its base. Peploe blocks the rock in flat planes of violet grey and slate blue, cutting the silhouette hard against pale sky. Washes of green and ochre pool at the shoreline, while white surf and small dabs of pink catch the tide. The brushwork stays visible, brisk, laid on thick where shadow gathers. Suited to a study or a hallway that needs a breath of Atlantic air, where stone and weather can do the talking.
