Cathedral of St. George in Novgorod

White stone walls climb from a grassy bank, three helmet domes silvered under a cold sky. Cathedral of St. George in Novgorod finds Pyotr Konchalovsky building a Russian church out of slabs of paint. Paint goes on in slab-like strokes that stack the walls like masonry. Ochre shadow sits in the narrow window slits, the domes read as dull pewter, and wet greens are dragged across the foreground beneath scumbled blue. It suits a study lined with books, or an entryway where plain plaster lets the whites and steel greys carry everything.
