Cathedral

The word Cathedral steps down the page in nine lines, each one a letter shorter, until a lone L marks the base. Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven raised a tower out of nothing but type. Heavy black capitals sit on pale paper, the whole shape drawn in negative space, architecture made of ink and silence. It is dada at its most austere, a concrete poem composed for the eye first, the voice second, with no image beyond the letters themselves. Best where quiet happens: a study, a reading nook, a hallway outside the library. The stark block holds its own against bare plaster and plain wood.
