Castle. The Doomed City

A dark castle broods at the center of Castle. The Doomed City, Nicholas Roerich giving the fortress walls a weight that seems to pull the whole horizon downward. Dense cobalt and violet shadow settle over the masonry, while a thin band of blood-red light burns along the ramparts like distant fire. Roerich builds the scene in flat, layered planes of tempera-like color, each tower a hard silhouette against the smoldering sky. Below, the doomed city sits emptied, its rooftops huddled in deep indigo as if already surrendered to fate. A reading room, study, or hallway with low light gives this brooding silhouette its fullest effect.
