Castle of Ladakh

A whitewashed castle clings to the ridge above Ladakh, painted by Nicholas Roerich in tempera blues so deep the mountains read as cut stone. Watchtowers stack against the slope, flat roofs catching a cold, high-altitude sun. Ruforeach strokes build the rock face in layered bands of ultramarine and slate, while the castle itself stays pale, almost bone-white, a single warm note of ochre at its base. Snow fields thin toward the summit. The sky is one unbroken sheet of cobalt, no clouds, no softness. A study or library wall hung with Himalayan subject matter suits this well, especially beside dark wood and low lamplight.
