Castle by the Sea

A stone castle holds its ground above the sea, its towers and slate roofs set against a restless sky. Gustave Loiseau painted this coastal fortress with quick, layered strokes of grey, blue and moss green. Loiseau built his surfaces through small crosshatched touches of oil paint, a method learned from the Post Impressionists. The ramparts sit firm in muted ochre and cool grey, while the water below churns in broken strokes of white and slate blue. Cloud shadows drift across the headland, and the whole scene carries the damp salt air of the Normandy coast. Suits a study, hallway or reading room where a view of sea and stone gives the eye somewhere to wander.
