Cassis. Ships

Fishing hulls crowd the harbor at Cassis, masts leaning into a hard southern sky. Pyotr Konchalovsky painted this Mediterranean scene in the constructed, slab-like manner he carried home from his French travels. Blue and white boats sit low in green water, rigging drawn in quick dark lines. Quayside walls run ochre and rose, roofs stack up the hillside, and thick oil paint leaves every stroke visible, cobalt shadows laid wet into sunlit ground. Set it in a study lined with travel books, a stairway landing, any room that wants the salt and glare of a working port.
