Cassis. Boats

Fishing boats jostle at their moorings in the harbor of Cassis, masts tilting against a hard southern sky. Pyotr Konchalovsky caught the scene with thick, confident brushwork and sun-bright color. Cobalt and cerulean water churn beneath curved hulls; each keel takes the light in ochre, rust red, and chalky white. Behind the quay a village climbs its hillside in stacked terracotta blocks, and the heavy impasto makes every ripple read almost sculptural. A seaside study, a stairway landing, or a kitchen with blue tile suits the palette; the salt air of the Riviera seems to follow it indoors.
