Cart in an Autumn Landscape

A wooden farm cart stands at the center of an autumn landscape, its wheel and shafts catching the last of the afternoon light. Gustave Loiseau painted these working countryside scenes with the same attention he gave his Paris streets, building the composition from short, layered brushstrokes. Russet and ochre foliage thins toward a pale sky. The cart itself carries the darkest notes in the picture, its timber rendered in browns and violets, while stubble fields and hedgerows recede in muted greens and golds. Loose crosshatched strokes give the trees their late October air. A natural fit for a study, hallway, or reading nook where quieter rural tones belong.
