Carnations

Carnations crowd the foreground, their ruffled heads in deep crimson and dusty rose, painted by the Romanian master Stefan Luchian. Petals catch the light in thick, deliberate strokes. Stems cross at odd angles in a simple vessel, leaves rendered in olive and sage green against a muted ground. Each bloom carries a slightly different red, from wine dark to soft coral at the edges, and the brushwork stays loose where the color is densest. Luchian was celebrated for these flower studies, and the affection shows in every petal. Suits a dining room or a quiet reading corner where color does the talking.
