Carnations — Framed Poster

Carnations crowd the foreground, their ruffled heads nodding at odd angles in a still life by Nicolae Vermont. The Romanian painter handles each bloom with thick, deliberate strokes. Petals shift from deep crimson into dusty rose where the light grazes them. Grey-green stems cut diagonally across the middle of the composition, leaves narrow and slightly curled. Behind the flowers, a muted earthen ground, ochre and umber layered thin, lets the reds burn hotter by contrast. A glass vase or ceramic jug holds the bouquet, its rim catching one bright highlight.
